Lately I have been getting a lot of hormonal acne and have been using the Nexcare Acne Patch to dry out my stubborn acne spots. I have not seen these acne patches being sold in stores in North America, but they are very popular in Asia. I picked up a package of Nexcare Acne Patch from a health and beauty store while I was on vacation in Taiwan. The acne patches in the package I bought come in an assortment of large and small circular acne patches, and they look like beige, semi-transparent stickers. They are waterproof and breathable, and also prevent bacterial infections – great for compulsive pickers!
Essentially, these acne patches are hydrocolloid dressings that promote healing by decreasing swelling and absorbing pus. Hydrocolloid dressings contain gel-forming agents in an adhesive compound and often contain an alginate to increase absorption capabilities.
After cleansing your face, gently pat your face dry and adhere these little suckers on your blemishes. They will absorb the pus and oil out of each pimple! These work best if your acne has come to a head (when your pimple has a firm white head) and you prick the head gently with a sterilized needle before applying the acne patch. I normally wear them before I go to bed so they can work their magic throughout the night. By the next morning, you can actually see that the patch has turned white from all the pus and oil it absorbed!! I know it sounds gross, but it is so satisfying and it works!! For really stubborn pimples, I use a second acne patch the following night. You know the acne patch worked when your pimple has flattened and dried out =].
